Listen to the Episode: The Creative Commons Classroom
Elliott Bledsoe Creative Commons

Everyone knows how easy it is these days to appropriate digital material; photos, videos, sound files – just a couple of clicks and they’re yours. And just about everyone who has worked in education in recent years has been impacted upon by institutional concerns (perhaps even paranoia, some might say) about this ready thievability.

But does everyone know about Creative Commons? Thats the question we put to Elliott Bledsoe (Queensland Institute of Technology, ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation) after his workshop on this topic at AUC’s CreateWorld 2008. Creative Commons is an international licensing system that enables developers/owners of digital content to set varying conditions on the re-use, development and author acknowledgement of that material. In this interview Elliott explains more about Creative Commons and talks about some of the projects he is undertaking to increase the engagement of educational communities with the concept.

Do you have any experience of Creative Commons? How might it impact on your educational practice? Listen to this podcast episode and then please add your comments to the blog.

You can also view the Creative Commons case studies.

And you can find out more about Creative Commons in Australia as well as Creative Commons internationally.

Also find a nice little 2.5 minute video, very useful for helping both teachers and students understand the creative commons concept, at About Creative Commons

Listen to the commentary: Could it be a "renaissance of creativity"?

Jenny Lane and Stephen Johnston (Edith Cowan University) were part of the Creative Commons workshop. They talk to us about the relevance of Creative Commons to educational settings, and consider the challenges for Professional Development in this area. Stephen believes that history will look back on this emergence of creative commons as a "renaissance of creativity", as the focus of upcoming generations shifts from individual ownership to a sense of managed, shared intelligence …. could he be right?

Some notes worth sharing from this excellent teacher education focused workshop… Creative Commons has strong relevance in the classroom today sitting within the legal framework of current copyright law, offering an open/flexible system for students to manage their intellectual property.
Michael Dezuanni’s presentation ‘Remixing Issues with One Minute Wonders; Ethical Practices for using Multi Media Production’ was highly informative and practical. Check out his book ‘Media Remix: Digital Projects for Students’ published by Jacaranda Wiley.

After listening to the audio comments (great addition to this blog btw, thanks Alan), Steve and Jenny have raised some interesting points which have prompted the following question. What are the current policies in each university on using Creative Commons? Perhaps there needs to be an update on policy to include using Creative Commons in education (if they don’t already exist), I agree that having workshops/PD similar to this one at Create World ’08 would be beneficial to academic staff. At the very least it would clarify that ‘legal grey area’ on what infringes copyright in an educational context and expose ways that Creative Commons can legitimately encourage creativity without copyright paranoia lurking about.
it would be interesting to hear what others think or are already doing…
